Through my ceramic work, I explore various clay bodies, their raw features, and the
natural texture they hold. I’ve discovered the importance of appreciating the unique presence and structure of the material itself. By selectively glazing some of the ceramic surfaces, I’m able to emphasize the natural appearance after putting the clay through the ceramic firing process. In this series, I took the stagnant medium of ceramics and brought movement to it through the motion of chains. They symbolize the interconnectedness of all things, binding us to the natural world through the earth-based clay. In some pieces, chains serve as structural elements, supporting and anchoring the form. In others, they are decorative accents, adding texture and visual interest.
